The Learning Orchestras Charitable Trust was founded in 1995 with the aim of giving aspiring instrumentalists the opportunity to play in an orchestral setting at a much earlier stage of their musical education (or re-education – many players have taken up their instruments again after a break) than is usual.
From small beginnings as an evening class, led voluntarily by David Evans, with a handful of enthusiastic adult students, TLO expanded to two orchestras: Intermediate (Grade 4/5) and Main Orchestra (Grade 6+), each meeting for weekly rehearsals in central London and continuing the original inclusive philosophy.

During the lockdowns of 2020/21 the orchestra organised joint rehearsals and concerts over zoom led by David Evans and Geoff Irwin, which helped to keep people playing and in touch, and to ensure that we were ready to restart when able. Currently we are playing in person as a combined orchestra and are monitoring the possibilities of expanding again in the future.

TLO Trustees are long serving members of the orchestra who combine a love of music with a wealth of experience from other walks of life. We have all benefited greatly from being welcomed into the orchestra at various stages of our musical journeys.
